Cobra Kai Mai Tai (Punch)

3/4 oz Plantation 3 Star Rum
3/4 oz Plantation Original Dark Rum
3/4 oz Cruzan Blackstrap Rum
1/2 oz Yukon Jack
1/2 oz Lime Juice
1/2 oz Orgeat
splash Rare Bird Overproof Rum
(1 1/2 oz Pineapple Juice)

For the cocktail: Shake everything (sans the Pineapple Juice) with ice and strain into an ice filled Tiki or Double Rocks glass. Splash a bit of Overproof Rum on top and garnish with a Lime wedge and a sprig of Mint. For the punch: Scale as necessary, including the Pineapple Juice before shaking or stirring (depending on total volume).

For a while I’ve been wanting to host small movie and cocktail nights here at Green Jenkin’s Walk in Closet Home Bar. Cobra Kai, the sequel to the original Karate Kid franchise no one knew they wanted so much, seemed the perfect opportunity. I have access to YouTube Red through my Google Music subscription (though the names of these services are pending change) while many of my friends do not. So, binge watching and thematic drinks were in order.

For the evening I wanted to make a pair of concept drinks, one an elegant, floral drink called “The Bonsai”  to represent Miyagi-do that I’ll post in parallel to this flashy, hard hitting drink with little substance who’s entire name is “Cobra Kai Mai Tai Strike First, Strike Hard, No Mercy Punch“.

To make this a Mai Tai variant I swapped out the Curaçao in the original for a half ounce of Yukon Jack. My reasoning was not initially for the flavor (I mean, it’s Yukon Jack), but because YuJack and Lime Juice make a Snake Bite… Cobra… Strike Hard… etc. Remarkably, it actually tasted o.k. For the evening I’m making this as a pre-batched punch but if I were to make these individually, I’d make them as a slightly more proper Mai Tai, if such a thing exists, and leave out the Pineapple Juice.

There are other Cobra Kai Cocktails that have been posted and I like how Cocktail Virgin Slut  based theirs on the Cobra and Cobra’s Fang, but I wanted mine to be based on something more relevant to my own youth in the Snake Bite. I went with actual Lime Juice over Rose’s because this drink is damned sweet enough.

The ratios for the ~.75 liters of punch are as follows…

100 ml Plantation 3 Star Rum
100 ml Plantation Original Dark Rum
100 ml Cruzan Blackstrap Rum
75 ml Yukon Jack
100 ml Lime Juice
75 ml Orgeat
200 ml Pineapple Juice
