DROID

A few things have been keeping me from posting lately and I just had to rebuild or reformat a couple of computers here as well (oh, and the fact that there is nothing going on has a lot to do with anything I should type in public anyway). But, a new toy is worthy of posting while I take a break from a project that will never see the light of day here.

I just got my fucking Droid. Everything is fucking wonderful about this fucking phone and it kills anything out there on everything…except, well, maybe actual fucking call quality…which isn’t why you really get a phone these days anyway, so fuck it. That and the fear that the battery will kick in a year is definitely something that has me wary about ever buying another Motorolla. My LG had a much better call quality and after 2 years, the battery was still fine. I’m hoping that the quality is only bad because I had the thing connected to my twitchy WiFi instead of the 3G network. Tomorrow, when I actually call someone, I’ll try to remember to switch it over and test the call again.

There are a few things that make this a kick assed phone above and beyond all the others. One of the greatest features past the specs and hardware is the fact that you can just plug it into your USB and drag all the music and ringtones and pictures and movies (same mp4 format as iPod touch) just like it’s a portable hard drive or a hacked iPod running Rockbox. The music, movies and pics can all be read without some bullshit syncing software like iTunes and ANY pic can be used as a wallpaper and ANY mp3 can be used as a ringtone. The only music it won’t play are DRM locked files if you were stupid enough to buy them like that in the first place.

Audio quality is nearly as good as my old 5G iPod and with a 16 gig chip, it can hold quite a bit of stuff. I imagine that a lot of space is going to get filled with stupid apps though. So far I have all the necessary FaceBook, GMail, Netflix Cue shit all connected and I can even update my webpages in a pinch. Aside from the necessities I have appz that give me a nice Japanese artwork wallpaper that changes with the hours of the day, the obligatory Sudoku, and an app that ties into my Google Maps that tells me where all the Zombies are.

The 5 Mpx camera is o.k. for a phone camera and the flash can be used as an LED flashlight with a free app. The sausage fingers I inherited from my Ukranian grandfather have a hard time on the slide out keypad, but for quick text the touch screen virtual keypad is just fine. For some reason I have a better time with that on things like webforms but if I’m writing out a whole email or long text I really need the ease of access to the punctuation on a full keypad. After a couple days I’ve gotten pretty used to it and it’s getting easier. the screen itself is fuckloads better than the old LG Dare but I have only used an iPhone/ iTouch once or twice. At the time they seemed fuckloads better than the LG as well, but I have no idea how they compare to the Droid.

One thing that this phone does best is link all of your shit together. If you have accounts with Gmail, FaceBook, Netflix, YouTube, etc, they can all tie together for ease of use. In fact, my phone contact list (which was pulled from my GMail contact list, looks for people I have friended on FaceBook and uses their FB account pic as their image on my phone. It’s pretty creepy actually.

The YouTube app even has a direct link to my account and I can record directly to YouTube (or make a vid and upload it later, of course…that could lead to more public Absinthe embarrassment way too easily).
